Summary:

The British Ivermectin Recommendation Development (BIRD) meeting, held on 20th February 2021 in Bath, aimed to evaluate ivermectin’s efficacy in treating and preventing Covid-19, especially in low- and middle-income countries where access to vaccines is limited. With global Covid-19 deaths surpassing 2.4 million, the meeting sought answers to critical questions regarding ivermectin’s impact on health outcomes for infected individuals and those at higher risk. Following a comprehensive assessment using the DECIDE evidence-to-decision framework, health professionals reviewed substantial evidence and provided recommendations. The BIRD panel ultimately endorsed ivermectin for Covid-19 prevention and treatment, suggesting immediate rollout alongside further research into optimal dosages and combinations. Emphasis was placed on public awareness and distribution strategies, particularly for vulnerable populations, while also noting the need for caution among pregnant and lactating women. The recommendations aimed to inform health policies and clinical protocols, promoting equity and access to treatment for all affected by Covid-19.
